Located almost 1,900 ft below Cuzco,
the Urubamba Sacred Valley is one of the most beautiful places of Peru - a succession of picturesque towns and archeological remains. Famous for its Indian market, Pisac does not escape from ancient legends. The city presents a statue: it is said that the cacique Huayllapuma had a daughter called Inquill, who had to marry a man that could build, in one night, the bridge over the
Urubamba River (a very significant bridge for the defense of the place).
Prince Asto Rimac decided to take the challenge. While he was working, the princess had to climb a hill without turning around; otherwise, she and her fiancé would turn into rock. At dawn, the prince finished the work but Inquill, anxious, turned around thus becoming a stone figure up to now.
Ollantaytambo is an archaeological park to which different functions had been attributed. It is considered a
military construction strategically located to protect
Cuzco from possible invasions. Ollantaytambo is one of the few cities that still
maintain the Inca system of urban planning.
