MACHU PICCHU

Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983, Machu Picchu is definitely the emblem of the Inca Empire. Located 3,000 ft. lower than Cusco, where the Andes and the Amazon rainforest meet, Machu Picchu is though to be built in the mid 15tth century by Inca Pachacutec and inhabited until the Spanish conquest. It’s purpose still not deciphered, Machu Picchu was rediscovered and brought to world attention by Yale University historian and lecturer Hiram Bingham, who was, ironically, looking for another site considered to be the last Inca refuge during the Hispanic invasion. In July of 2007 Machu Picchu was chosen as one of new 7 Wonders of the World.
