LIMA
Was founded in 1535 by Spanish conqueror
Francisco Pizarro, and quickly became not only the
most important city, but also the capital of the
Viceroyalty of Peru, an area that encompassed almost
all of Spain’s South American territories. In 1821
Peru declared its independence, and Lima was named
the capital city of the new republic. A bustling
city of 8 million inhabitants, approximately 30% of
Peru’s total population, Lima is on UNESCO´s World
Cultural Heritage list. As a testimony of its rich
cultural legacy, visitors can see pre-Hispanic
archaeological sites along with splendid examples of
colonial architecture. |
